HISTORY OF NEWPORT, RI

Founded in 1639, Newport has a long and storied past. It was a key seaport during the colonial era and became a haven for religious freedom early on. In the 19th century, it evolved into a summer playground for America’s wealthiest families, who built lavish mansions along Bellevue Avenue. During the 20th century, Newport also became a center for naval strategy and remains home to the U.S. Naval War College.

Fun fact: Newport is home to the oldest synagogue in the United States — Touro Synagogue — founded in 1763 and still active today.
