HISTORY OF FAIRHAVEN, MA

Fairhaven was officially incorporated in 1812, but its history stretches back to the 1600s when it was originally part of Dartmouth. The town played an important role in the whaling industry, with ships setting sail from New Bedford Harbor. Fairhaven is also known for its unique ties to global history—Henry Huttleston Rogers, a Fairhaven native and Standard Oil magnate, funded many of the town’s most iconic public buildings, including schools, libraries, and the town hall.

Fun fact: The famous author Mark Twain was a close friend of Rogers and visited Fairhaven frequently—he even gave a speech at the Fairhaven Town Hall!
