HISTORY OF LAKEVILLE, MA

Lakeville was incorporated in 1853, carved out of parts of Middleborough and surrounding towns. Its name reflects the many lakes that define its geography — including Assawompset Pond, which plays a major role in the town's ecosystem and even supplies drinking water to New Bedford. Historically, the area was home to Wampanoag communities, and the connection to water and land remains central to its identity today.

Fun fact: Assawompset Pond is the largest natural body of water in Massachusetts and is known for the annual alewife run, when thousands of fish migrate upstream in spring.

NEIGHBORHOODS & AREAS

Lakeville is known for its residential lakeside neighborhoods, sprawling conservation land, and quiet, family-friendly streets. Many homes are nestled among woods or along ponds, giving residents a strong sense of privacy and connection to nature. Its commuter rail station and proximity to Route 140 and I-495 make it an attractive option for those working in Boston or Providence.

THINGS TO DO

Lakeville’s outdoor lifestyle is a major draw. Locals enjoy boating, kayaking, and fishing on Long Pond, Assawompset Pond, and Great Quittacas Pond. Betty’s Neck and other conservation areas offer scenic trails and wildlife watching. The town also has golf courses and farms nearby for weekend fun, plus access to cranberry bogs and rural drives that define the area’s charm.
