HISTORY OF EAST PROVIDENCE, RI

East Providence was originally settled as part of Rehoboth, Massachusetts in the 1600s. It later became part of Rhode Island after a border dispute was resolved in the 19th century. The area flourished during the Industrial Revolution with the development of mills along the Ten Mile River and continued to grow as a residential community in the 20th century. Today, its history is visible in landmarks like the Pomham Rocks Lighthouse and the historic Rumford section.

Fun fact: The Pomham Rocks Lighthouse, built in 1871, still stands on a small island in the Providence River and has been fully restored.
