Little Compton

A hidden gem known for its rich history, natural beauty, and timeless New England charm.

"Welcome to Little Compton"

Nestled along the scenic shores of Rhode Island’s eastern coast lies the charming and picturesque town of Little Compton. With a population just under 4,000, this idyllic coastal community is a hidden gem known for its rich history, natural beauty, and timeless New England charm.

Little Compton’s history dates back to the early 17th century when English settlers first established the town. Today, its historic district still showcases well-preserved colonial architecture, including the Wilbor House Museum, a captivating glimpse into the town’s past. Visitors can wander through streets lined with centuries-old stone walls, quaint white-picket fences, and colonial-era homes.

The town’s natural beauty is a highlight, with the rugged coastline of the Sakonnet River providing breathtaking vistas and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Goosewing Beach Preserve offers miles of pristine, sandy shores and hiking trails. The South Shore Beach is a local favorite for sunbathing and swimming.

Agriculture is deeply rooted in Little Compton’s identity. The Little Compton Agricultural Trust is one of the best preservation groups in the country.  The trust serves its mission primarily through the purchase of land and development rights, in addition to generous donations of land and conservation easements. To date, we have preserved, or partnered in preserving, over 2,000 acres! More than 650 acres of that land is owned outright by the Ag Trust, with 133 acres leased to local farmers for use in food production.

The small but mighty town is home to over 25 farms which specialize in produce, dairy, beef, flowers, bees, & more. Despite its small size, Little Compton boasts a vibrant arts and cultural scene. The Little Compton Historical Society hosts various events and exhibits that showcase the town’s heritage, while local artists frequently display their work in galleries throughout the area.

If you’re stopping by a trip to “the commons” is a must.  The Commons is considered the center of town and where a few shops are located.  Wilburs General store has been a fixture of Little Compton and was established in 1893. This friendly landmark looks deceptively small from the outside…inside you will discover eight rooms filled with just about anything and everything one could need or want in a true general store. From the full grocery aisles and meat counter, to four rooms of fine gifts, books, toys, clothing, cards, wrapping paper and tableware to a amazingly well-stocked hardware department, Wilbur’s goal is to let year-round, and seasonal residents alike relax into the casual pace of this special corner of Rhode Island.

In Little Compton, time seems to slow down as you take in the breathtaking landscapes, explore its rich history, and savor the genuine warmth of its people. Residents in Little Compton take pride in their close-knit and friendly atmosphere. Annual events like the Town Common Tree Lighting and the Fourth of July Parade bring neighbors together to celebrate their shared traditions. Whether you’re seeking a relaxing escape or a glimpse into New England’s past, Little Compton, Rhode Island, is a destination that captures the heart and leaves an indelible mark on all who visit.
